Floor insulation

Cork underlayment is usually available in slabs or rolls that can be easily laid on the floor before the floor is installed. It is important to choose the right thickness of the cork underlayment that will be suitable for the specific type of floor and the conditions in the room.

One of the main advantages of the cork  is its excellent sound insulation. Thanks to its structure, the cork effectively reduces sounds transmitted through the floor, such as knocks, cracks or footsteps. This is especially important in living spaces, where noise penetrating to adjacent rooms or to lower floors can be reduced.

Cork is a naturally elastic material, which makes the cork underlay extremely resilient. It acts as a natural shock absorber that reduces pressure on the floor, which can contribute to comfort when walking and reduce stress on joints. A cork underlayment also helps distribute the load evenly across the floor surface, which can affect the durability of the floor.

Cork harvesting

Natural cork is made from the bark of the cork oak (Quercus suber). The natural cork production process includes the following steps:

  • Harvesting the bark: The process begins by harvesting the bark of the cork oak. This bark is densely distributed over the trunks of the tree and is harvested in a way that minimizes damage to the tree. Harvesting the bark is done manually or with special tools.
  • Drying: After harvesting, the bark is dried outdoors for about 6 to 12 months. During drying, the bark loses moisture, and at the same time its structure changes, becoming more elastic.
  • Sorting and grading: After drying, the bark is sorted and graded based on quality. The best pieces are selected that will be suitable for the production of high-quality cork.
  • Pressing: Selected pieces of bark are pressed into flat cork slabs. This process consists in cutting the cork to the appropriate dimensions and smoothing the surface.
  • Treatment and finishing: The cork slabs are then treated and finished to give them their final shape and appearance. They can be cut into smaller pieces or formed into various products such as bottle stoppers or cork panels.

It is worth noting that natural cork is an eco-friendly and renewable material as cork trees can be re-peeled every few years without damaging the tree. Therefore, natural cork is widely used in the wine industry, as well as in the production of flooring, sound insulation and other products.
